Cutout Location

I just got my cutout with DMH electric opener/closer and will be installing them next week. I was just wondering what the best location is for the cutout, right before the bend over the axle or just over the over before it enters the muffler? Also does anyone have sound clips of their cutout?

Thanks,
Chris

right before the muffler, so that there is less noise in the car

Right before the axle reduced ground clearance for me and one day I ended up hitting an elevated manhole cap and screwed up the whole exhaust. Although if installed right, it probably would be ok. (but too noisy) The guys who installed mine never did it before.

After that, I installed it right before it goes in the muffler and the ground clearance stayed the same.

Picture here.

Put it right out of the y pipe. Let it sound as close to open headers as possible. Whats the point in having it right before the muffler?

I would agree. But from what I have heard, it's too hard to install it right by the y-pipe. I would install it before the rear axle. I had mine installed there and I did not lose much ground clearance at all.

I had mine installed right where madwolf has his installed. I changed my exhaust so its gone now but when I had it, it was relativly easy to cap and uncap.

I got mine where the cat USED to be. Thats the best place, i think. You dont lose ground clearance. And your exhaust will sound better when it is capped up. Screw emmissions and the cat.

Benji,
What headers are you using? How does it sound open? I'm thinking about finally putting one on mine. I'm also thinking about putting it in my cat replacement pipe.

I am running Eldelbrock shorties. I have heard a few different cutouts, with different headers and even stock manifolds. They all sound about the same. LOUD!!!! I gained about a tenth in the quarter with it open too.

I placed my cutout right before the intermediate pipe dumps over the rear axle, and gained 1mph and a .1 from it.

An old trick to find optimum cutout location is to paint the intermediate pipe, drive it around for awhile, and where the paint stops flaking off, put the cutout there. I don't understand the reasoning for this, but a few people have told me that's a good idea.

that is where your exhaust is burning the hottest, therefore anywhere after is just where it is trying to release. so whereever it is hottest is a good place for it to release.

I thought that was the rule for an H or X pipe?

I plan on putting mine right after the Y-pipe comes together, right as it bends to go to the rear of the car. The bad part is that it would be facing the owards the middle of the car, so i wount be able to just put the cap on and off anytime, and the interior noise may bee too harsh. I have the SLP TOL exhaust though, so I don't think I'd gain much putting it just before the muffler. Any thoughts on this?

Also, since I have a 3" I pipe, what size cut-out do I need . Someone told me 3.25", but I haven't been able to find one that size. Any help? Links maybe?
