Custom ram air setup from non ram air hood... need help

Ok i have this hood. It's a "big block" cowl hood.

I plan on cutting the front out and making a rectangular box out of sheet metal which goes into a 3" collector then run some PVC piping to the air meter then to the intake. My question is what about water? If it's raining some water wil be sucked into the intake. I figure there won't be too much water being taken in.

The collector i am talking about is like this. Imagine if you cut the end off of a muffler. It will be flat with an outlet tube welded onto it. This is how i plan to do it. I know it wont ram much air in, but it should give me colder air then the cheap ebay setup that picks it right up from the engine bay.

Maybe i won't even use the collector. I have seen a K&N filter which is a flat over shaped cone and maybe i could fit this right in thie area and i could build a heat shield around it.

Any ideas?

I don't see how you would get any more water in the engine then the stock "SS" hood. I've never had a problem with mine and I've removed the baffles and screen.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but your going to a lot of trouble for little or no gain.

I have an aftermarket ss hood, and had the stock type ramair box that matched it. I sold that and made a cold air kit that places the air filter under the car below the stock location. so it draws air only from the front of the car. the plastic ramair box I had had alot of bends in it to turn the air into the engine, and it bolted to the top of the intake, so it got heat soaked badly. not good. also, dont use metal for any of that, it'll heat soak and completly cancel out any gain you may have gotten by making the ramair box. you can always do it, but dont expect to gain anything from it in power. IMHO

Yeah, i have already scratched this idea. I have decided to cut out my stock firebird front bumper between the two holes in it already and put a really long filter there.
