Cross Over Tube On Back Of Heads

Replacing blown head gasket. What is the intended use for the cross over in the back of the heads. I understand it is to flow coolant, but do I need to run the cross over or can I plug them??

It is used to vent the steam out of the heads to prevent air pockets and overheating and warping the head.

if you do a TB bypass, the coolant flows directly into their instead of the TB. That should give you a better "picture" of whats happening.

EXTERNAL COOLANT LINES

There is an extra hole that goes into the water jacket on both ends of the heads. These should be plugged when they’re in the front, but left open when they’re on the back. There’ s an external coolant transfer line that connects the holes on the back side to a reservoir that vents the air and steam vapors that would be trapped in the head and cause hot spots.

the bolts have holes in them so you need to go to a GM dealer and buy the right ones.
