Crankshaft

I did not find any definitive answer.

On a car thats only going to rev to 6000 RPM with a hotcam with no forced induction. Is there any reason I should not rebuild it with a steel crankshaft from summit that costs 189 dollars?

Re: Crankshaft

The stock crank would be fine if you want to use it.

Just make sure it's for a 1 piece rear main seal if you get the one from summit. I'd personally just re-use the stock crank.

Yep, just have the stocker checked and reuse it. It's plenty strong enough. If you go with the $189 crank, don't forget you will need to have it balanced with will cost more. Mallory metal ain't cheap.

Re: Crankshaft

Okay, if I use the old one don't I have to have it turned. Why would it be better to use one with 130k+ miles versus a new one? Do they not get old?

I am looking to buy a rebuild kit, and I wanted make sure I got the right parts that will work with my crank.

Re: Crankshaft

A good machine shop can check the crank to see if it's within tolerances or not. If it is, you can re-use it without getting it turned, using new bearings. If it's not within tolerances, you'll have to have it turned.

It's not that cranks don't get old, you just aren't asking very much of it by using a fairly mild cam and keeping the RPM's low. You can wear anything out to the point of failure by putting more stress on it.

Re: Crankshaft

Is anyone aware of the cost of having it turned? I am just concerned because I want to minimize down time.

Re: Crankshaft

Is the Summit crank any good? I would doubt it's as good as the stock crank. But that is just a guess. If it were me I'd have the stocker out and inspect it. Re-use it if it looks good.
