I dont remember seeing anything like that on my old motor, but apparently this goes on to the crank gear and the crank position sensor reads it. My question is if I didnt install it, it would throw a code to the CPS because the CPS cant read the reluctor. So in otherwords, for my car to not throw a code, I would have to put on the reluctor.

Yeah for a 97 you need the ring for the cps sensor. They arent very expensive...but if you forgot to put it on...well....you could probably get that sensor tuned out if you plan on getting a tune. Or just suck it up and tear it apart.

Make sure and get the correct timing chain cover too if you're not reusing the stock.

It will also throw off the spacing of your accessory belt, because the hub goes on after it. You might throw belts if you don't go back and put it (or a spacer) in. Remember, these are only on 96-97 engines.

 

The easiest fix for this problem would be to replace your 96/97 hub with a 93-95 hub (longer to make up for no reluctor), program out the CPS from the PCM, and call it a day. Not worth tearing down the timing cover.

 

That's an option.

 

i just bought a motor but it doesent have the aluminum heads and my old motor is gone ...my car is a 96 z28 convertible 6 speed...im just now getting back to workin on it the engine i have now doesnt have a sensor nor did it have a reluctor ring ...this engine i have now is a test engine from the dealership any help with getting this engine running and drivable again would be greatly appreciated for faster response heres my phone number

Is the engine in fact an LT1? Does it have the number "327" cast on the front of the block, below the driver's side head?

If it's an LT1, and not an L99, it can have either aluminum heads (Corvette and F-Body versions) or cast iron heads (B-Body versions).

Then there's the year of the engine. The early versions installed in OBD-I year vehicles did not have a crank position sensor. The later versions installed in OBD-II year vehicles do have the crank position sensor. It was added in OBD-II only to monitor for misfires, and the engine will run perfectly without it. You would just have a code in the PCM and an SES light for the missing sensor, but it can be "tuned out" to eliminate the code, with no ill effects on the engine.
