Question Crank position sensor question

My pcm is throwing a code for crank position malfunction.
Code 3 and 7.

I dont think there's anything wrong with the sensor because the car runs fine with the obd1 pcm.

What else will trigger these codes?

Thanks

Re: Crank position sensor question

Are you saying the OBD2 computer is throwing the code?

Check the pig tail that plugs into the CPS. They can get corroded and trip codes.

Re: Crank position sensor question

Well, when I'm using the OBD1 pcm I dont get any SES light.
As soon as I stick in the OBD2 I get the SES light.

I also notice my car loses a lot of power with the OBD2.
Does the OBD1 not monitor the CPS?

And because my car runs fine with the OBD1 pcm in, I'm wondering if something else
is actually the culprit.

Thanks

Re: Crank position sensor question

The OBD1 computer does not read the CPS. The CPS is used to monitor a few things, one of them being misfires. If the computer is getting a bad reading from the sensor it may think the car is misfiring so it may be playing havoc with the fuel and timing to make it stop.

Re: Crank position sensor question

Where did you get "Code 3 and 7" from? Are you saying that's what you get when you use your OBD-II PCM? The OBD-II codes are 4 digits. For example, the CKP sensor code it P0335 and P0336. So a "3" and a "7" doesn't make sense. Are you possible getting misfire codes for cylinders 3 and 7?

Something seems screwed up.

Re: Crank position sensor question

When the guy hooked up the smog test machine I saw a code 3 and 7 on the screen of his machine. (with obd2)
Since I just installed the obd2 pcm back on he told me to drive it around a couple of days then come back.
I'll probably check the wires for the CPS and if the wires are good I guess I'll have to change it again.

Thanks

Re: Crank position sensor question

Car's not running as good as it should, especially starting from first gear.
Should I just change it back to OBD1 and forget about it?
