Crank hub on too far?

Okay, my Lt1 has been apart for a while. If I remember correctly, the black spacer goes on the bolt, then through the crank hub into the crank. I heated the hub in the sun, put a small piece of a 4x4 on the end and tapped it in with a hammer some. I then started tightening with a torque wrench looking for the 74 ft lbs. Before I could get anywhere near 74ft lbs, the crank pulley started hitting the opti-spark? I have the crank hub greased and the bolt with loctite so maybe I was already overtightening? I am pulling the hub back off for now, anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance guys.

what year is the car your workin on. Is it possible that your opti isnt indexed right thus not letting it sit all the way back.

Thanks for the reply, it is a '96 TA engine. I believe the opti is correct. The plug wires are in the same position as before I took it off and it is mounted flush up against the timing cover where the mounting flanges are located. I re-installed the hub and pulley and torqued to 74 ft lbs and the crank pulley is just barely starting to touch the opti. If I turn the pulley around I have a little clearance. Wondering if the guy I bought the car from had the pulley on backwards (he mentioned having the engine down to the shortblock before)?

Did you remember to put the reluctor ring for the crank sensor on first?

You really shouldn't be hammering the hub onto the crank, or using the bolt to pull it on. I stripped threads by doing that. You should be using an installer like this one:

I think even without it it still should not touch, I have ran without one or a spacer before and had no issue with it touching the opti.
