Crank hub stuck? help please!
Crank hub stuck? help please!
I tried searching first, but cant figure out where I'm going wrong
the motor is on a stand, so space isn't an issue. I have been using the crows foot style puller and have now destroyed two of them. The threads on the center bolt of the puller keep in stripping, (yes I have lubed the threads) and the hub hasn't budged a bit. I used the original crank bolt to push off of, but removed the washer. I have used this method before on a friends 94 LT1 and it worked fine, is there something different about my 96? Does anyone have any ideas? Please Help!!!

Re: Crank hub stuck? help please!
There isn't, even with the crank bolt in there (with no washer of course) I can look in there with a light and see that it clears the hub itself, so its not holding it on. Is there any reason that I'm missing why a longer bolt to push off of would work any better than the original crank bolt itself?
Re: Crank hub stuck? help please!
try using a 1/4" extention (like a 4" to 6" one) down in the hole at the end of the crank. use that to put the center piece of the puller on (the open end of the extention, where you put the wrench, should be facing out. put the puller center piece in that). then crank it out that way. thats how i did mine and it worked good.

I thought of that after I broke the first one, so I went and got the strongest most expensive one I could find and it broke exactly like the cheap one did. Thats why I think the problem is something else or I'm doing something wrong. Thank god for the lifetime warranty on most tools from O'Reillys

Could be...I went and got a 4" long grade 8 bolt to stick in the crank snout on my lunch break, I guess I will find out if it works when I get home...
Re: Crank hub stuck? help please!
Well, the 4" bolt worked
for anyone else who does a search and finds this thread, it was a grade 8 bolt, 5/16 thread by 4" long. Thanks everyone for you advice
