Crank hub problems removing it

I stuck a smaller bolt into the crank hub to push against the crank to remove the hub from the crankshaft. It was coming out then the bolt bottomed out, now the bolt is stuck in there and I cant get it out. I tried putting a socket in it but it wont go on. Any ideas? Did I do something wrong to the engine?

You'll have to explain that one better, at least for me to get it. If you used a smaller (thinner) bolt. it shouldn't thead in at all, it should just go in and bottom out inside the crank. I don't see how it would get stuck in there. Or did you use a bolt the same size as the stock crank bolt, but shorter?

Hey Dave

I think I know what he did... he used a longer, thinner bolt in the crank snout. That bolt probably started to buckle inside the snout and is now jammed against the threads. I've seen this happen before, but unfortunately I don't know how to help out with removal.

I got it, thanks for trying to help. WayneE was right, the bolt squished inside the crank hub and made a "S" shape. I got the bolt out by pounding the hub back in so I could grip the head of the bolt and I worked it out of the crankshaft. USE STRONG BOLTS WHEN DOING THIS!

Ugh... I had the same thing happen to me. Luckily I caught it before it got jammed in there. Then I used a grade 8 bolt and I was fine.

Check the threads in the crank snout and make sure they're not messed up, too!

Next time, just get the same size bolt as the stocker, just longer and grade 8 steel

I just had a similar thing happen, but the grade 8 bolt didn't get stuck. I was fortunate there. What happens is that the middle bolt on the puller gets slightly off center on the head of the bolt you've stuck in. I ended up using a 5/16 X 4" allen head bolt instead. The allen head forces the point of the puller to stay centered. It came off, but it was tight enough to mar the end of the puller and the bolt. The bolt didn't buckle though.

Try heating the hub up real good. Mine wouldnt budge for anything until I heated up real good. Slid right out after that.
