Crank hub issues...........

Well almost got the hub off the crankshaft. I used the steering wheel puller style from advance auto and probably got it to move forward about an inch or so pushing against the crank hub bolt......well this is where the problems started, I thought I read somewhere on here to use a 1/4 inch drive small extention and push against that so thats what I did and now the 1/4 drive is flush with the hub and can not push anymore, so we tried a 3/8 ext against it to no avail and a small socket to no avail. I havent tried to max out the pulling on this because I am scared to death of breaking the ears on the hub. Anyone got some helpful insight into this issue or a fix in mind. Thanks in advance.

U will not break the ears off the hub...i promise! Here is what i did!

I took the crank hub bolt with me to Lowes and got one just like it but about 1 1/2 inches longer...thread it in there...and use it to push on! Mine came right off when i did that!

Re: Crank hub issues...........

Instead of using a 3inch extension go to your local hardware store and buy a 4in long Allen head bolt, but make sure its smaller in diameter then the crank bolt itself bc you will want it to just slide right into the crank snout without threading it in. Trust me we keep a stockpile of 4in Allen head bolts around just for this purpose.

Re: Crank hub issues...........

Well here is the deal i would take either of your ideas and run with it but the 1/4 ext is now stuck all the way in the hole where the crank bolt goes with the part that ataches to the rachet facing out (this is so far in there that it is now flush with the back of crank hub). So I guess I am going to have to push against that until it comes out........how much does it have to move before it comes off.......like I said it moved about and inch or more. Can I put a bar on the ears and hit it with a rubber mallet, will that do anything........would love to have this thing off tomorrow. Thanks.

Re: Crank hub issues...........

i used a rubber mallet and a puller to get mine off, i didnt like it but i had to do it. i would tap the ears with the mallet and tighten the puller like 1/4 turn and hit with the mallet again. it took a while but it worked.

U could try the mallot it couldnt hurt. U can also get a pri bar and use the front sway bar to pivot off of and try to pry on the ears while turning the hub now and then.

Cool that helps a bit.........I think I can see the very back lip of it and it started to seep a tiny bit of oil at the very end.

Re: Crank hub issues...........

You should be using a normal balancer puller that has 3 feet. I guess TransAmGT never saw the pic of the guy who busted off one of the ears of his hub when trying to pull it off incorrectly. If your hub is still moving out as you crank, hopefully you will be ok.

I hope you can get your extension out when you finally get the hub off.

Re: Crank hub issues...........

if ya still have the extension stuck in there you could try getting another extension and attaching them together so you can pull the one thats stuck out

but when i got mine out i just used about a 4 inch bolt stuck in the center to push against with a harmonic balancer puller

Re: Crank hub issues...........

Got the hub off this morning, used another 1/4" extention. Now just have to get the first one out of the hub.
