Crank (hub) bolt broke in two

Long story short, i was pulling the hub onto the crank with the bolt, and the bolt broke in two.

Removed hub, and the bolt is flush with the crank .

Took it to a welding shop, and the guy worked on it with me for 4 hours. We would weld up on the bolt and then weld a nut to it, try to spin the nut. Everytime we would either break the weld, or actually pull part of the bolt off which the weld stuck to. I guess it stretched the threads, it isnt comming out by turning it.

So, who has done this and what to fix short of pulling motor and tearing it apart? Thought about using a helicoil, but that means drilling out a grade 8 bolt in the middle of my crank shaft. Doesnt sound like a possible task to get the drill and tap in straight.

Also, i put the hub back on (using BFH method) with some red locktite. Anyone want to tell me some real world experiences with how long their hubs held onto the crank without the center bolt? Seems to me over time it will eventualy loosen.

i had this happen....

i tried an easy out at first.... broke the easy out.

then i took it to several machine shops, none of them wanted to touch it.... so i had to figure it out on my own.

it's gonna take awhile.

bascially, i ended up using grinding stones to wear down the easy out. then i used regular drill bits to out what was left of the bolt. i didnt go big enough to drill out the threads, although it was as close to them as i could get. then i used a bottom tap to work out everything else.... which takes some patience/skill

i probably had ~8 hours of labor into the project.... most of that time was getting through the easy-out out though.

my crank was out of the car...

good luck.

TTT, open to any and all ideas without pulling motor.

Maybe some how making a 2 piece hub? Cut the thing in 1/2, weld it to the crank, then weld the other half onto the 1st???
