Crane 99893 springs

I have heard many don't advise using the retainers, locks, keys and shims that come with Crane valve springs. Why is this? Are they not as strong or durable as Comps?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Ok I just learned that dual springs don't come with retainers, locks, etc. Would people advise Comp's retainer kit over Crane's?

first off, the # you posted is only for the crane v/springs (dual springs). If you want the whole kit it's #10308 and that will come with the retainers (steel), locks, and spring seats.

I'm using the 10308 kit but instead of using the spring seats that come in the kit I used seats made by comp instead. I don't remember the part # right now but I could get it for you if you want.

Once installed and set up properly on your heads (installed heights and spring pressures) the crane kit will work great, no issues at all.

Thanks

I'm just about to pick up a set of brand new 99893's for $75 and needed some advise as to which retainer set to go with...

Happen to have a p/n for just the retainer set?

use the springs. comp hardware

611-16 locks
740-16 retainers
4770-16 seats

i might have the seats and retainers mixed up, but either way use those part #s, comps hardware is far better, cranes seats are shims, nothing more, comps seats(locators) are dual level thick steel seats that LOCATE the spring on the guide

The part # for just the retainers (the ones that come in the 10308 kit) is #99951-16, keep in mind that this is a steel retainer and with those springs are meant to be installed on a STK. LT1 alum. cyl. head with STK. valves. If you have head work done or have installed valves that are different than stk. you may need a different retainer.

look for my reply on the 2nd page. Good luck!!!

CC-611-16 (10 deg. Superlocks)
CC-740-16 (Steel Retainers)
CC-4770-16 (ID Spring Seats)

Typical price for all of this?

As Cman states above the Crane kit comes with whimpy .015" thick, flat hardened shims. The are not spring seats (also called locators) that hold in the spring from the ID and keep the spring from walking around the head. I picked up a used set of CC that fit just right. I don't recall the ID measurements except that the OD was about 1.5" to nicely fit the 1.48"OD of the Crane dual springs and was .060" thick. They fit oem heads.

I set them up at an installed height of 1.85" anything lower and these springs exert too much seat pressure for my likes.
