crane 227

Just wondering what you guys think would be a good head to work with the crane 227 cam? Right now I'm just going to run the stock iron heads, but figured I would save up and get a new set of heads to run with it.

There are exactly ZERO aftermarket heads I would recommend on a stock shortblock especially unported. So for most builds ported GM aluminum heads are a great choice.

As 96 said, the stockers ported by a good company will be a great move up from stock. No need to go with a aftermarket piece.

I guess it depends on your goals but I'm not sure I'd waste $1300 on heads for a such a small improvement on a cam. Although, lets hear some goals for the vehicle, if it's a Impala, supporting mods, etc. Maybe I'm misremembering the cam size.

Get a set of ported heads and that 227 will come alive. LE, Bradby, AI.... Any of those would be an excellent choice.

Just for the sake of knowledge, iron heads flow better than aluminum heads.

Sure do...stock compared to stock. All bets are off once they're ported.

Crane 227 and Ai Heads

You can see in my mods list that I have Ai heads with a 227. I would say
that the heads are worth 25-35 rwhp over stock with the cam. Granted I
added SLP shortys with the head swap, but I had also ported the stock
cast iron manifolds so the increase on the exhaust side was not drastic.

Adding ported heads is clearly noticable. Although I have not yet been able
to get back on the dyno since the head swap, I'm guessing I should go from
316 to 350-360 rwhp. I've been driving the car so long with the heads that
I don't notice them any more, but the first few weeks were a real eye opener.

not a bad choice for a cam only setup, but I would go AI/LE stock castings and matching cam.

cam

I'm thinking with this set up I should be in the high12s low 13s it should make for a fun car. I thought I would try it as is and then at the end of the summer switch the heads and go and run it again

I am. Stock, iron heads flow better. Ported, there is no difference. Seems like a pretty direct comparison to me....

I have the 227 cam and blown head gaskets. If I were to go the route of ported heads what would I be paying and how much should I port them to match this cam?
How do you think the Edlebrock 61909 heads would match up?

The Edelbrock heads/cam/intake don't get any favorable reviews from reputable sources. Magazine articles even show them to be a joke and magazines make money pretending parts are good.
