Crane 104227 Cam update!

Crane Powermax 104227

210/224

This thread is for updated or new info/performance on the cam.
I'm sure otehrs may be interested as well. The info in the search section is kind of old by now. What's the latest from those running this cam?

Nothing new to report here, other than it's a great cam and if I wanted
20 more rwhp I would put in a set of mids.

That cam has such low lift. I just dont see it making a lot of power on a stock head LT1.

It's got lift where it needs it, on the notoriously weak exhaust side. That cam is a torque monster and is definitely no slouch. Very sleeper.

It was designed for stock heads. With 1.6s your at 511/553 and about 10
more rwhp. Guys with proper setups, stock heads and all the bolt-ons should
be in the 320+ range.

Dan,

Thanks for the subliminal message. Maybe I'll crack one of these days and go
for the headers. The Macs are the obvious choice for many reasons, but I'm
still more concerned with the CARB legality and units like the JBAs. I wish there
was a good comparison of the 94-95 Macs to the 94-95 JBAs.

My preference is to stay with the 1 5/8 primaries to maintain that great torque
curve of the 227. It's probably worth my time to drive down to San Diego
and take a look at a set of JBA's.

Those lift #'s are with 1.5 rockers. With the typical 1.6 RR's it's

0.511/0.553

which is higher than many cams for the exhaust. Like Fastbird said, it has the lift where it needs it, and it shows from the added duration and lift in the exhaust. The cam was designed great for the LT1 heads.

:edit: You beat me to it Mike.

I thought the original lift numbers were with 1.6s.

Nope.

I'm a BIG fan of the 227 cam by the way.

I ran the times in the sig with it with ported heads and babying it off the line. And it drives like stock, when I had it in it never surged on me once, and it had amazing lowend.

Not so much the extra lift, but the extra duration.

I'm bring this back to the top bcuz of some questions.

Anyone running this cam with stock cats? I have this cam in my 97 SS, and need a tune bad, but was wondering what kind of numbers your putting out with cats. I have ported heads and SLP headers with the cam.

thanks

Re: Crane 104227 Cam update!

I don't have stock cats, but I have dual cats and stock exhaust manifolds.
You can see the mods list and true dual pics for more info.
