Couple of questions about LT1 build up and cost...

I plan on building my LT1 up, but dont really know what exactly I should be looking at in terms of cost.
I want to get the following:
LT4 Hot Cam
Pacesetter LTs & Y pipe
Port my stock heads (not to sure to what)
Stall (not sure which)

My question is how much should I expect to pay for the porting of heads, and installation of the cam, lts, stall and heads?

Also dont know what else I need to or should do while its in the shop, so any advise would be great.

I was talking to my brother (who knows more than I about LT1s) and he was saying I should expect around 420hp at the flywheel, does that sound about right?

I live in CA, so it has to be able to pass sniffer (will put cats on for smog) and I will be using it as a daily driver, so I dont want crazy.

Thanks for all replies in advance.

I can't comment about CA emissions. As far as cost, there is a huge variability. For labor, a big name professional shop is going to charge top dollar (and probably do good work). At the other end, you might find a good mech working "on the side" out of their house and get good work very cheap. You're best bet is to find out about a good local shop in your area and talk to them. You are in CA, which is probably nearly as bad as the People's Republic of NY for the cost of doing business. Here, the independent shop I am affiliated with charges $82/h and no one is getting rich on that. In contrast, guys in the more rural parts of the South charge about half that and make a living. In any case, it's a lot of work. I'd pull the motor to do it. The motor R+R alone is about a days work, maybe a bit less. Not a big job to pull the heads, cam and reinstall them. Maybe another 4-6 hours. Giving a little wiggle room, I'd say the motor, cam, and heads R+R is 16 hours or so at what ever the hourly rate is plus a couple of hundred bucks for gaskets, fluids, other shop supplies.

The heads are going to price out very differently depending what you want to do with them. Look at the long head porting thread here in LT1 Tech and you may decide to go to AI or Elliot's Portworks - both seem to know their stuff, talk to them.

Good luck.

Thanks. So I guess I would be looking at around $1600.
Anyone from CA?

Cool, you have a better memory than I.
Still need to know cost on porting heads and install. As well as stall and tranny build up to handle power.
Thanks

I had my heads mildly ported for $400 and had bigger valves installed (2.00 intake, 1.56 exhaust) for another $300. The labor to install a cam will be about the same as doing heads and cam.
