a couple questions about the hotcam kit...

I have a few questions. The kit says the roller rockers are self aligning. I have heard that you are not suppose to use hardened pushrods with that type of roller rocker. Since my car is suppose to have hardened pushrods, can they be used with the kit?

My next question is, can I leave the rev limiter where it is stock with the hotcam in the car? Or how about 6000 RPMS. I am not to comfortable with reving my motor above 6 grand due to the miles on it (92k).

My last question is, can I put just the hotcam and new valve springs in and call it quits? What kind of power gain would I see by just doing this? Would it still have a lumpy idle?

Just a bunch of crazy questions that are on my mind..

Rob

Who told you that? They're fine. I have hardened ones too. Besides, all factory rocker arms are self aligning to a point correct?

You are concerned about 92 thousand? I have 182,000 and some others have up in the 250,000's and are on stock optis too. Pushing 6000rpm is not a big deal. You can leave it at the stock 6k limit.

About just puting in the cam and springs then calling it quits, I have no clue, I have not done a cam swap yet.

You really shouldnt just put the cam in and new springs.

With those miles, your stock lifters are probably "worn" to fit how the stock cam has broken in. Just replacing the cam without the lifters could cause rapid wear.

Used pushrods on new lifters can wear in faster.

Basically, any new internal moving part, against an old part, will wear in much faster than if it were all replaced at one time.

Don't forget about the timing chain. With that many miles, I wouldn't do the cam without changing the timing set as well. When I did my Hot Cam, I went ahead and put in the GM ED timing chain and sprockets, but I would at least install a new stock set.

Geez don't worry about it with 92k miles! I installed a HOTcam kit and some ported heads at ~125k, and had no problems with the internals. I re-used the stock lifters, put a new chain on it(didn't replace sprockets), re-used the pushrods and had the rev limiter set to 6200. You might want to upgrade your valvesprings though, every machinist I've talked to has said the springs that come in the kit are borderline or unacceptable.

Any cam is going to shift your powerband up, so if you're afraid to rev the thing, don't put a cam in it..... Just my opinion.

what springs would you recommend upgrading to?

comp cams 987 work too, but I do not know if the heads need to be machined or not. Can the heads accept a spring up to 1.46 or something?

I'm not up to date on the valvespring knowledge here, I just let my machine shop pick a set for me. They were able to look at the cam specs and figure out what I'd need.
