Cost of used engine/rebuild?

Hey guys..

First off, I'd like to apologize to those of you that I never got back to in my other thread about selling my car with a blown engine. I am having other thoughts, but am still not totally sure. So, I'd like to ask you guys what I would need to expect cost wise to rebuild my LT1? It's being rebuilt because of crystallized rings. Would it be cheaper to buy a used LT1 with relatively low mileage and drop it in? How much would the 'drop in' cost? How about the used LT1 itself? Everything has 137,000 miles on it except for the CAI and exhaust...should I just go ahead and sell this guy? I just can't afford any more major problems down the road Thanks everyone...

Keep in mind, my budget is somewhere around 2300-2500.00. Would it be even remotely possible to have something like a 383 or something like that dropped in within that price range? Sorry about my ignorance...I am not the most knowledgeable about cars *I know, painfully obvious lol*.

couple of options:

1 - a 355 rebuild would probably run you in the neighborhood of $2500 + or - a few hunred.

2. you could always get a brand new LT1 crate from GM...they go for $4300 from GM parts direct, and you get a warranty!

Just depends on what you want. the more exotic the rebuild, the more it's going to cost.

just a couple of options.

you could always go to zeeya94. He owns fbodyjunk.com and has stuff for really reasonable prices. I bought a T-56 Conversion kit from him, which should come tomorrow. He's a real nice guy to talk to as well as his wife. He probably has about 4 LT1's around and i think he sells them all for $1000 OBO. So you could give that a shot if you wanted too. i got a 30K mile impala SS LT1 for my old caprice for 800, with the computer harness, almost all accesories stock manifolds, and some other misc parts. Deals are out there you gotta look for em. Try looking for an LT1 from a totalled caprice roadmaster or caddy, they all had an LT1 at one time or another, theyre rated at 15 less HP but have more torque down low so itll be funner around town but not quite as fast on a dragstrip. They have iron heads and a slightly different cam thats the only difference. If you could get a deal on an engine from one of those cars it just may be what you need.
