Cost of shipping LT1 engine?
Cost of shipping LT1 engine?
Hey,
I have listed my 396 in the "for sale" section and I was wondering if anyone had an idea of cost to ship this thing if I don't find a local buyer. I have no idea since I've never shipped anything this big before. Don't know where it will go yet either.
I imagine the weight isn't that far off of a stock LT1. So if anyone can tell me (1) how much does a stock LT1 weigh, (2) how much did it cost to ship yours, (3) from where to where, (4) what shipper did you use.
Thanks,
Jason

Costs can vary wildly. Assume a fully dressed and crated engine will be about 700 lbs. Distance is also a major factor.
The best deal is if you know a business who ships regularly via "common carrier" (truck). They may have a price deal with a carrier (trucking company), and might offer to ship for you at some discount off list price.
If you have to ship yourself, the least expensive way is for your to shlep the crated engine to the truck terminal and the receiver plan to pick it up at the terminal nearest him.
If they have to pick it up at your place and you don't have a fork lift, they need to bring a liftgate truck. That's two extra costs. Same at the receiver's end.
OK, so go online or call some major common carriers like Roadway, Yellow Freight E.Duie Pyle, or whatever you see in your area. Ask for pricing terminal to terminal. You want a carrier who goes direct to the destination and doesn't have to hand it off to someone else. That might not be possible.
Ask for a quote, and get it email or in writing via snailmail. Oh, you probably want to send it collect so receiver pays, unless you get a great deal from the neighborood company. In that case it will be prepaid (you pay).
Shop around.

It was about $450 for getting my my LT1 and T56 shipped to me from NJ to UT, via USF Reddaway. The total weight was in at 400 lbs for everything, and I even had some extras coming along with the drivetrain. http://www.usfc.com/

If it was a complete LT1 and T56 their scale was off. The combo would have a shipping weight of at least 650lbs.

Please, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! for the love of all that is pure and holy ONLY ship with a company that will allow you to ship collect. I say this because I used Overnight Express to ship an 02' Z06 rearend to a guy that I auctioned it to on Ebay 2 years ago. When I was on the phone with the girl who was giving me a quote, I told her what the item was and she had some kind've database that she looked it up in and she was like, "Oh yeah here it is. Looks like 250lbs. That'll be a class such-and-such." In other words, the gal led me to believe that this was an item they had already figured the cost of shipping for and had in their system. So I took her quote, added it to the Ebay auction total and called it a done deal. FOUR months later, I got an invoice in the mail from Overnight stating that I miscalculated the weight of the item and that there was an additional charge added onto the total shipping cost. Wanna guess how much? Only double the original shipping quote.
To make a long story short, I've had to fight this in small claims court after Overnight took the liberty of charging my credit card for the balance they claim I owed them. Without my authorization of course. Do yourself a favor and let the buyer handle all the why's and wherefore's involved with arranging shipping: then if there are any clerical mistakes or misjudgements anywhere it won't come back on your head.

My LT1 was shipped from Ohio to albany and cost me 175. I used overnight and picked it up at there depot in Latham. It couldnt have been a smoother transaction. Oh and It was collect, I had to pay them in order to pick it up. they loaded it onto my truck and I was gone.
