cost of refreshing the motor?

what have you guys paid to have a motor refreshed by a reputable machine shop?

im assuming replace the bearings and rings, and inspect everything. im not sure what else is usually included.

Rings for the LT1 are pretty expensive, that is why most people just go with a new set of pistons while they are in there.

Just don't fall into it like me. I was planning on just pistons, now I have a forged 383 rotating assembly on the way lol

LOL... Rings for the LT1 are the same as for an SBC. $120 will get you a damn good set of rings. For those that "go with a new set of pistons while they are in there" ... Pistons aren't cheap at $400 a set , those that are just freshening up a motor can get along fine on new rings and bearings. Assuming all the parts are okay, I wouldn't expect to spend much more than $500on a motor freshening. Well, the short block at least .

Re: cost of refreshing the motor?

Thats interesting, pace performance (similar to GMPD) sells them at $45/piston. At 8 pistons, that adds up to a little more than your $120 figure.

That's interesting, GM Parts Direct sells them for quite a bit less ~ even though you say they're similar to paceparts . Almost a 20% savings though them... For the same part #. Furthermore, they have it labeled as a piston ring kit. So.. Does this mean it's all the rings for a single piston. Consisting of the 1st, 2nd and oil ring..? Or, is it just one ring you pick and choose from? OR... Maybe it's a complete set for all 8 pistons. Could it be?? Naaa...

At any rate, a decent set of stock replacement rings can be had for less than $25 from summit or jegs. My "$120 figure" came from a good set of Plasma-Molys, thanks for playing.

But, if you think it's acceptable to spend upwards of $360 on a set of piston rings.... Umm.. I got some ocean front property in Arzona for sale. You interested?

Re: cost of refreshing the motor?

I was just always under the impression that stock LT1 pistons would not work well (or at all) with a standard SBC ring kit?? And that price is for the set of 3 rings. $45*8*80% is still $288, more than most want to pay for a ring kit.

P.S. my ***** is 11"......around *think about it*

Re: cost of refreshing the motor?

you guys pay way too much for your engine rebuilds. unless you're planning on making a buttload of power you don't need 45 dollar pistons. or 120 dollar piston rings.

for a rebuild/refresh. as in, just putting back to stock, just replacing the bearings, rings, gaskets. could be done for a few hunderd in parts. and then you're looking at a few hundred in machine work, if you want it done right. you'd probably wanna replace the pistons, as it'd be wise to have the cylinders bored.

btw, i paid 11 dollars a piston, (totalling 88 dollars) for some speed pro hypereutectic pistons from summit. i don't plan on using nitrous or a blower on this motor so why go all out. and the rings are speed-pro rings as well, i think it was 35 for the entire set. for a "rebuild", not not a build-up, no need for over kill.

but that was for a gen 1 small block. but i think they're the same.

edit: here's a breakdown:

entire fel-pro gasket set = 35 dollars (summit)
timing chain and gear set = 15 (coyles, autozone)
main bearings = 25 dollars (clevite, autozone)
rod bearings = 16 dollars for 8 (clevite, autozone)
pistons = 88 dollars
stock crank polished/hot tanked, mic'd, = 40ish dollars
new pistons pressed onto old rods = 36 dollars
rods centered and matched = 16 dollars
block bored .030 over, hot tanked magnufluxed, new cam bearings and freeze plugs = 200 dollars
piston rings = 35 dollars
new oil pump = 20 dollars

i probably forgot some stuff, but i think that's basicly it. that comes to, after taxes and shipping, around 600 dollars. i actually spent around 2000 because i got a new intake manifold, trickflow heads, a new cam/lifters, pushrods, roller rockers and headers.

but again, that was for a generation 1 small block chevy. but i think everything but the gaskets is pretty much the same. as far as the things you'd have to replace for a refreshing....oh, and the timing chain.

p.s. i'm kinda drunk right now.

edit number 2: okay, i looked, and it was 12.88 a piston. i told you i was a little drunk.... http://store.summitracing.com/partde...N=120%20301506

Heh.. I was a pissed off biatch last night. Sorry about that!

Anywhoo.. you can use most of the parts david97gsxr listed. Except for the timing chain as gasket set. That's the only place LT1's are different. The pan gasket alone is about $35 .. Full gasket set is around $160. And the timing chain. Depending on how good you wanna go will determine how much you spend. Whether it's a stock replacement for about $80 I think.. Or and LT4 "extreme duty" chain for about double that. Or if you convert to a double roller it's $80 for that, and another $170 for an electric water pump.

Re: cost of refreshing the motor?

Damn Shawn, where did you find a complete LT1 gasket and seal set for $160?!?! Everything I see totals over $300 for a COMPLETE set!!!

Ditto on the Cloyes, not unless you buy an electric water pump...and if you're an older car, don't you also have to convert to the vented opti? Or is that optional...

Bearings are cheap.
Rings are cheap.
Pistons - no sense in buying them UNLESS you need to get bored. Save the bore until you need it.

Valvejob isn't going to run you that much either.

Flatlander Racing.

$65 for head gaskets - both
$20 for intake
$15 for exhaust
$12 for timing cover seat
$10 for RMS
$35 for the oil pan gaskets

I think that's about right.

Re: cost of refreshing the motor?

wow..........guess i should have mentioned in the first post.........i purchased a used forged 383 shortblock. it has a bad cam bearing, but i just want to refresh the whole thing before putting it in my car. so it looks like about $4-500 for the rings/bearings and labor.
