Cooling Problems

I Just bought a 1995 Trans Am M6 [110K miles] from Cali and I picked it up from the shipper tonight [I live in PA]. On the way driving it home, the temp went up to 210, then about half way between the 3rd tick and the middle tick on the gauge which is prob around 230 or so. Also when we started it up and let it idle, the low coolant light was on but when we checked the levels, they were all ok. It would go from like 230 back down and hung around 200ish. I only drove about 5 miles home to my house and its parked now cause I dont know what the problem might be. Coolant sensor??? Thermostat??? Geez I just went from my V6 Camaro to the good old LT-1 and problems already Anyone have any ideas??? Anything would be great. Also its totally stock. Any help with some starter mods? Thanks!

Do your fans come on? (try a new relay)
Is your weep hole leaking? (new WP)

I did not think about the fans. I dont remember if they came on or not. I will check that in the morning. I did not see any leaks either. I can check that in the morning too and see if there is anything. Thanks for the fast reply!!! I got a shower and came back to a answer

Your temps sound pretty normal. Stock fans don't come on until 226°, so that is why you see the temp go up and then come back down at idle. Sounds like the fans are working.

Sounds like a normal lt1 they run hot . best bet change the thermanelstat to a Hypertech 160 deg power stat . this will help out alot with ur hot lt1. also ask how old the water pump is u might need a new water pump . Also the low coolant light is very common its a sensor that goes bad or get cloaged up with crap . either clean it or replace it its on the inter upper pass siden of the radiator ull need to take the battery out to see it its a brown box. mine did same thing. Also cheak the coolant if its mucky change it and or flush it .

Just unplug the low coolant sensor. Those things are notorious for giving a false reading.

Ok thanks a lot for the help. Im going to order that 160 thermo ASAP and check the sensor. Its running cooler today...didnt even go up to 210 when i drove it for a bit so maybe it was just a thing since it was trucked from CA to PA and not ran a lot. Thanks again for all the help and soooo glad to finally have a LT-1

just a noob here, but you may also want to make sure your coolant system is bled properly. The lt1's have a reverse flow coolant system that has to be bled. Air in the coolant system could also be the reason for the low coolant light being on.

Well I also noticed something else today, the car is missing that front plastic air dam under the nose. That has to be part of the problem cause when im driving its not getting any air back under the engine. Any ideas where i can order that from?? GM dealer or somewhere on the net? Thanks again for all the comments...

That will most definitely affect temps when you are on the road. You need that on there.

1993-1997 f-body front air deflector (air dam)
GM p/n 10229657
$16.86 wholesale

or pick one up from a bone yard.
