Cooling issue 1995 Z28

I have a 95 Z28. I have noticed that the temperature will go very high when ideling(55 degree day), approx 215, and then the fans will kick on. If the stock thermostat is 175, then why doesn't the temperature stay at 175? Is this because the fan is not a conventional mechanical fan clutch which would normally have some cooling at idle??

old coolant and/or clogged radiator will also hinder cooling effecientcy.

Cars with electric fans heat up at idle. It's the way they are because there is no air flow across the radiator when the car is not moving.

Re: Cooling issue 1995 Z28

Hi there,
All sounds fine to me.The cooling fans are controlled by the PCM(powertrain control module). The PCM will command low speed fans "ON" at 226 degrees and "OFF" at 221 degrees and, high speed fans "ON" at 235 degrees and "OFF" at 230 degrees.
The cooling fans should come "ON" anytime A/C system is operating. So if you want your car to run a little cooler in traffic then have your air control **** set to a position that activates the A/C compressor. There are only two settings that do not turn on the A/C comressor, the setting that directs air to the floor and the setting that directs air through the main vents at upper body height.
Call me old-fashioned but I actually prefer the mechanical fans, although they reduce engine power and are a little noisy, they keep the cooling system at a more consistant temperature.
A lot of the guys have a manual switch installed to turn the fans on when they like, the weather is cooler over here in England, but for you guys in the U.S this is more beneficial.
Very best regards,Mark Brand.

Your fans are operating the way they were designed to. But I have been much happier since I installed a Jet fan switch. Now my fans come on at 180 and the engine temp rarely exceeds 200 degrees, even in stop and go traffic in hot weather.

My 97 ss also runs around 215 or 220 in traffic, at highway speeds its just under 195 or so. I would like to have run around 190 or below at all times!
