Coolant leak, can't find it either.
Coolant leak, can't find it either.
Ive had a coolant leak for the past few weeks. Its not a major one but every other place i park io find a 2in diameter circle. Well, i was watching it but couldnt find out where it was leaking. A lof of my wireloom and hose protectors got filled with it so i cant tell the source.
Today my low coolant light came on so i think it is time to do something. Its a 97 z28 in pretty good condition with a 160 thermostat. Even today, it didnt get hotter than 170* but i do want to fix it.
I dont know much about coolant systems yet so bear with me. I flushed the system about 3000 miles ago and put 50/50 dexcool/water. I believe my pump may be bad because there is some in a loom directly under it. I don't even know if its the pump for sure but its something that has 2 coolant lines running to it and its on the top of the engine bay on the drivers side.
I am wondering if its the pump, could i fix it or would i have to buy another one?

I had a similar problem on my 94. My leak came from the overflow. i had coolant all over my engine bay. pull your battery out and the overflow is under it. my leak came from the hose that connects the top of the radiator to the top of the overflow. it was an aluminum hose and it was corroded (sp?) to hell. hope this helps.

Re: Coolant leak, can't find it either.
Ill have to check that out. I forgot to mention that my coolant was leaking at one point through the coolant cap. I replaced the cap and fixed that. Is there any good way to tell where its coming from?

I"d check your pump. Under the pump there is a "weep hole" that the coolant will leak out of when the bearing seal starts to go in the pump. It will just get worse and worse until u fix it.
If it is your pump, I'd recomend getting a electric water pump, thats what I did a nice upgrade while your there. ANd the electric doesn't have the bearing that can leak like the mechanical pump, so it's safer for the opti.
