Coolant

While looking at the condition of the coolant, I noticed that it seems to be a bit greasy..possibly having some oil in it. I'm not positive it's engine oil, but the coolant is definately not bright green. The engine oil does not appear to have any coolant in it whatsoever, no coffee color, no foam on the dipstick, etc. Is there a way to determine that this is engine oil? While doing my own research, seems that it could possibly be the oil/grease from the inside of the radiator itself if it's new (the radiator is in such good condition I'm doubting it's original)...all hoses are also either new or in excellent shape. No overheating issues at all...just saw it doing a health check. My plan of action so far is to have it flushed/filled and see if it recurs/comes back. Any ideas? I was going to install the prestone flush/fill kit and do it myself, but can't bring myself to cut a braided hose to install a plastic t connector. This car also appears to have the police pkg, if that makes any difference at all.

Just to confuse things even more, coolant in a '95 should be the orange Dexcool. Could be someone mixed the orange and the green. Draw some of it off and see what color it is. An anti-freeze tester should do the trick.

A little oil looking stuff is pretty normal on old coolant. I'd drain and flush and using oine of the new extended life coolants that are miscible with any type of coolant...

The 1995 Z28 came from the factory with the "green stuff".

Trans Cooler

Check our trans fluid and be sure it is not contaminated with antifreeze. I have seen the internal trans cooler of a rad break and cause cross contamination in cars over the years.

Thanks! I have checked the tranny fluid and I'm sure I would have seen if it were contaminated, but at the time I was just checking for level and making sure it wasn't burnt...I'll check this next time I'm under the hood. Does tranny fluid react the same way to the presence of antifreeze/water as oil does, ie; foamy/milky and gunked up, etc?

Tranny Fluid

Yes..tranny fluid will get milky looking just like oil if contaminated with antifreeze.
