XE230/236 (33xx series lobes) with Comp 987 springs, Comp stock replacement lifters, Trickflow chrome-moly pushrods, and Comp Pro Mags. I rev to 6400. Made max power at 6300.

Look into the Crane 99893 dual springs, you use them with all other comp cams hardware, retainers, locators, and locks. The handle almost .700 lift and they have perfect seat pressure, I also believe they require no machining somehow.

I used the 986s with my 224/230 and compcams lifters for like 2 weeks before the motor sploded

Did you use a spring locator with thoses springs? What was your installed height? I used a set of Comp locators as I was not comfortable with the Crane .015" hardened shims supplied.

No machining required for those springs?

These Crane springs are 1.46" OD and even state on their website that they fit unmachined stock LT1 heads.

Also, be mindful that this spring is pretty stout for the street at an average spring rate of 408lbs/in. so be doublely sure of your installed spring height so you don't end up with too much pressure for a daily driver.

This is all coming from Nick at Nutek. He suggested for my 381 setup and LE heads, to run the Crane 99893 springs with compcams 4770-16 seats (locators), 740-16 CC chromemoly retainers, and 10* CC superlocks 613-16.

I, on my previous setup with XE224/230 ran the CC 986-16 springs with all the other CC hardware listed above, and there was no machining of the heads required. I belive the 99893 spring is slightly larger than the locator, but it is still within a diameter allowed by using stock heads.

He suggested these above all other springs, even other CC springs that handle more lift than 987s and require machining just because he found they have the best seat pressure and handle a great amount of lift of any spring, needing a spring that would fit in stock heads was not a requirement for me either.

Do you knwo the thickness of those CC locators? I used an old set of CC locators and polished the circumferences a bit to ensure a good fit. I don't know what the original P/N was but they were about .060" thick. I used the Crane steel retainers specified for those springs. They set up at 1.850" installed height that seemed ok. for me. The steel retainers are a bit heavy so I purchased a set of Crane Titanium retainers, but have been too lazy to install them.

I've had pretty good success & longevity running springs like comp's 985 & 977 on the more aggressive XE stuff. That's with good oil pressure & 875 lifters .

Don,

Comp's locators (like those 4770's) are generally .060"

Thanks. Can you tell us what spring (open) pressure you generally set those CC 895 and 977 springs at for a performance/street car? I'm always concerned about have the right pressure and worried about either too low or to high problems.

It just depends on the lobes you run really where I'd set up either spring. FWIW, the 985's at approximately 1.800" will handle a wide range of stuff pretty effectively in my experience & the 977's usually end up at 1.85-1.90ish.

Do these springs require head machining. If not what locators do you recommend.

977's @ 1.85" are good for about 0.650" lift and work well with my #3192/3196 XE lobes. These are the high lift (more agressive) 224/236 lobes.
