Comp guideplates
Comp guideplates
I asked about this in another thread, but didn't get any responses.
Why won't the comp cams 4808-8 guideplates work? They look the same and Summit says they're for the LT1, not that they're always right about anything, I just want to know. Thanks.
EDIT: The guys over at comp even said that they were correct. Any ideas???

Re: Comp guideplates
I have some pics of both. I ran the comp plates for about 200 miles and the pushrods were grinding. You can see the wear in the pics. They are a tad narrow than the gm ones.

This one is both plates lined up. The GM plate is in the front.

Re: Comp guideplates
These must be a new design then, because the ones I have also have the curved "face" like the GMPP ones unlike the one in your pics that's straight. Do you know what I'm talking about? I can always open the pushrod guide a little bit with a dremel if that won't ruin the whole purpose of the guideplate. Does anyone know what the clearance should be between the guideplate and the pushrod? Thanks.
Re: Comp guideplates
DO NOT use the Comp guide plates! They will not work on the LT1 castings. I just got done pulling them off in favor of GMPP plates. Luckly for me i didn't put a lot of miles on the new engine, but it was long enough to trash a roller rocker. One plate was so bad that the roller wanted to ride half way off the valve tip, which trashed the rocker. Even a dremel may not help some of them. Spend the $30 and get a set of the GMPP plates. That and the comp's will trash your pushrods also.

Re: Comp guideplates
Can anybody measure the opening for the pushrod on their GMPP guideplates? If possible, could you also measure how far back the curve is on the same side? Thanks.

Re: Comp guideplates
Nope. Didn't check alignment. Was just one of those overlooked things with all that was going on. Had so many other things going on with the car at the time and didn't know the comp's were an issue or I would have checked for sure. Wasn't used to checking cause I was running self aligners and no guides on the old setup. I chauked it up as an "oops" a learning experience and moved on.

Re: Comp guideplates
The reason is that the valve spacing on the heads for the Comp Guideplates and the GMPP Aluminum Bowtie guideplates is different.
Valve Spacing = distance between the intake and exhaust valves.
Run the GMPP ones or Isky Adjustables
