Re: Combination Motorsports 612 Spring FAILURE

I've got CM valvesprings - running up to 6600 rpms.. and the old lift was .598 / .608 .. No broken springs. New cam lift is a little less - but still... i'm yet to experience a problem.

PS - They've been in the car nearly two years.

Odd how it broke at a stoplight instead of WFO.

thats like when one persons fbody breaks down, everyone else should sell theirs.

any high performance product if going to have occasional failures, its inevitable............no one makes a perfect product.

now if a large percentage of CM spring users were having the same prob, then youd have a point, but this is the first report ive seen, so looks like an isolated case. you just have bad luck.

Yeah, bad luck indeed, and it probably is an isolated case. It's frustrating for sure. Will have the heads off by tonight and pics of the damage

Re: Combination Motorsports 612 Spring FAILURE

I have used these springs on ALOT of XE 224/230, GM 845, Crane 227, Hot Cam, CC 305, etc cams with no problems.

I have used them on a some cc 306 cams, XE 230/236 cams and my LE 1 cam (.550 to .570 lift) with no problems either.

At a lil over $100, It is a great bargain for a spring, retainer and lock set up that safely can handle .570 lift, 6400 RPM and produce 145 lbs on the seat and 350 open.

The next step up will be a double spring set up that will be about twice as much and usually require extra machine work for the larger spring diameter.

Good Luck.

Re: Combination Motorsports 612 Spring FAILURE

I pulled 3 broken Comp Cam (918s I believe) springs off before I put on the Ex612s. No problems so far. Not to say their springs suck..but 3 is a bit much and I didnt have the money to replace them. Sounds like you got a bad one... its bound to happen.

Re: Combination Motorsports 612 Spring FAILURE

Update: Got the head off, head is scuffed pretty good, valve tip didnt break which is good. Cylinder wall may or may not be fixable, theres one pretty decent sized scuff on it. Piston is a bit beat up, but isnt terrible. Probably fixable with some creative sanding/buffing (any ideas on how to best accomplish this is welcome, I know and understand why you normally wouldnt do this). Head is salvageable with some work on it, needs two valves. (I/E) Still have no idea why this spring broke. Going to local head guy later, will call CM in the morning once I've made a decision about what to do with the car.

Side question, how hard is it to replace pistons with the motor in the car? May go that route if its doable, and throw some new rod bolts in as well.

Re: Combination Motorsports 612 Spring FAILURE

I had purchased a set from FASASZ and they apparently had NEVER been used aside from having been installed. The motor was never turned so therefore the springs were never actually used.
Anyways, I never got around to using the springs and ended up selling them to help fund some repairs. The guy I sold them to installed them on his engine and INSTANTANEOUSLY broke like 2-3 springs. It makes me VERY wary of using these springs when cam time comes...

Re: Combination Motorsports 612 Spring FAILURE

Almost sounds like something was in the chamber besides the 2 valves and the end of the plug.

The valve chipped off a very small piece of piston where they hit which is what caused 99% of the scuffing i'm sure. I'll post pics in a few

So many variables... the broken springs I removed from my engine were broken due to Installer error. I bought the engine and when I got it the springs were already broke. He used the wrong springs with stock seats. Not the springs fault. Its entirely possible the person who installed your old springs did something wrong/used the wrong pushrod, etc, etc, etc. Just never know.

Does Jeff still have the car, or did you take it home already?
