Coil questions w/in

Hey guys,

I heard there are several coils available pretty cheap. What I am wondering is if you guys think that any of the more expensive coils can help performance on a 400hp-500hp LT1.

Otherwise, if all coils are equal, what is the best deal out there for replacing the stock one ?

I am running Bosch +4 plugs, Taylor wires, and a ignition booster system with:

100% secondary current (spark amperage) increase
4X spark energy increase for the initial spark discharge

I am also considering a 16v system upgrade next season.

Thanks Guys !

IMO the stock coil is plenty for any amount of hp.. I have heard to many bad stories with aftermarket coils. Plus I dont like the bosh + 4 plugs the idea in my head just dont make sence. but that is just me.. So for you setup I think I would stick with the stock coil.
If you do go to a MSD or simular keep the stock on close by, so when the aftermarket on fails you will be able to drive home.

Ok then what about coil troubleshooting ? I replaced everything else.. how do I troubleshoot my coil and make sure it is still 100% ?

In other words, alot of people talk about their coil wire failing, lets talk about prevention..

And what the hell is a 91 Camaro SS ?

You're asking about coils - get a stocker. Best way to troubleshoot a coil is to replace it with a known good one (from a friend's car).

Are you having a stumbling issue?

I'd ditch the +4 plugs for some Champion/NGK/ACDelco/Bostch+1 - how can you gap the +4s? That might be part of the problem...

I'm not really sure the secondary and spark discharge stuff, but there are plenty of guys running the stock ignition w/o problems. I'd go with a coil/plug (like the LTCC) setup if I wanted to up the voltage, but I've never really understood how you can increase the voltage by putting some in beteen the source and terminal in the first place.

I'm not having any specific problems at this time, but I am all about prevention. So what you are saying is either the coil works or it doesn't work ? There is no % decrease or degradation of performance ? Am I understanding you correctly ?

My ignition booster has to do with phase shift (matching the voltage and the higher amperage to match the driving demands). It is not your typical MSD (20 year old technology) setup.

Aww crap... so nobody likes to talk about coils.

So coils must not be very important ? Fawk. I know a couple years ago I remember a post about a thicker coil wire can help etc.. etc.. just trying to learn here.

Just run a 8MM coil wire and stock coil if you coil is bad replace it with a new GM coil.

If you want to run an aftermarket Coil you can Just keep the stock on hany beacuase they have been know to go bad very quick. And as far as seeing a gain it. I dont think you would unless the one you have now is bad.
