Coil or ICM?

I've been having an on and off problem with my car cutting out at high rpms. This normally happens when I'm above 5200 RPMs. Anyways, when I'm driving the car and pull up to those RPMs it seems like the car just cuts out just for a split second. Almost like the car shuts down for a second, then comes back again. I know it's not the rev limiter, so I'm assuming it's my coil or ICM. The car has pretty much ever bolt on plus stage III heads, and a ZZ409 cam. Does the stock 96 coil make enough voltage to work properly on my car? I was thinking about taking the ICM and bringing it to Checker or Autozone to have them test it. My wires and plugs are fine as well. Anyways, I think I'lll replace my coil...is there any point in going with a aftermarket coil like a MSD? Or is teh stock unit just fine? Also, could my ICM also be causing a problem such as this? Thanks for any help.

If you are still running the opti, i would suggest replacing the coil with a stock unit. The aftermarket ones such as MSD blaster coils tend to fry the stock opti's with the increased output. I am not sure if that is your problem but just wanted to give you a heads up on the coils-Jeff

Could also be your fuel system; check it with a fuel pressure gauge temporarily taped to your windshield. Changed your fuel filter lately? Shoebox's site has a wealth of information on how to troubleshoot the spark system; http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#opti_test

The fuel pump was replaced about 2000 miles ago. And the filter was done at the same time. And the fuel pressure is holding constant...no dips when I get on the gas. I may just try a new coil and see if that helps out.

Re: Coil or ICM?

Had the same problem with my 97. I chased it ofr 2 yrs replaced cap and rotor/ I changed out the plugs and wire 2 times. Then I thought is was fuel and it wasn't. It ended up being the opti. oil was seepingthough the shaft and going under the rotor and getting oil on the opti sensor.

And it was only breaking up at high 5k+ rpm's?

Hmm, I was thinking the same thing. You'd think you'd have problems all around the rpms range.

At first mine was just at 6k+ and over a few months and about 4000 miles it eventually got to the point of being enough to shut the car down due to no signal to the PCM. I replaced the opti and its been great since.

Re: Coil or ICM?

Yeah, it was light the rev limiter just kicked on at 5000 or so. I could rev it much then 5500. Remember< I had aleady replaced the cap and rotor not too long ago. So, I never thought it was the opti giving me trouble. Since I replaced the opti with a new GM replacement, I haven't had any trouble reaching 6000 rpm.

I'n not saying that it is for sure, it is your opti. it would be my best guess!

I've been running a Blaster and 6A for 5 years or more without any kind of problem, as have many others. I believe the "frying opti" claims to be an urban myth.
