coil help

so i was cleaning my TB today and decided to pull off the plug to the coil.. when i pulled it off it had white flaky stuff that almost looks like what builds up around the battery. i figured that this might be a big part of the problem as to why that my car was missing at idle and between 1500-2000 rpms. so i went to pep boys to get a new msd coil later to find out when i got home it was a bad coil so now i have to wait till tomorrow to get a new one in the morning.. do you guys think this could have been causing issues?
