code P1626, need help

I was cruisin down the street yesterday and decided I should stop for gas. Filled up, then when to turn the key and.......... nothing, all lights and accessories worked so I knew it wasn't my battery. Gave it a few more tries, checked my gas cap to make sure it was on tight and still nothing. I had it towed to my brothers shop where we ran the codes and I got P1626 Theft Deterrent Fuel Enable Signal Lost. I thought just maybe it was my key, because the pellet is a little loose so I went and got a new key made at a Chevy Dealorship. Still nothing. We checked to body control module for the theft detterent system and all wires and harnesses were looking good. Any ideas what the hell is wrong with my car? I got it at the shop right now but they havn't looked at it yet so I figure if I get some ideas about what can be wrong I can save some money by pointing them in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Probably the first thing needed to be known is "what is the SECURITY lamp on the dash doing?". When the key is turned to ON, it should illuminate for 5 seconds or so and then go OFF. If lucky, maybe you just have a loose connection at the BCM.

The security light is flashing when I turn the key, which in the book says I might have a damaged resistor in my key but I got a new one and it still didn't work so it wasn't that. Thanks shoebox.

But the problem may still be that it cannot read the key. Since it seems it is not the key, itself, the key cylinder would be suspect. You can bypass the reading of the key by putting a matching resistor at the VATS plug under the dash . You can also unplug that connector and see if you can read the key back through the wiring to the key cylinder. Maybe that will point you in a good direction. Key values.
