Code 36?

I was driving and it started to miss then just died in the intersection and took several tries to start. Now it runs ok if you are putting around but once you get in it a little you can tell the timing is way off and it runs like crap. Now i have done a search but i plan on starting with the opti harness first. I have pulled it off and it looks good but it is a 95 and i know it hasnt been replaced. Does anyone know who a good source for these are? I didnt see them on casper electronics website. is there only those two things that will cause this code 36 Harness and OPTI?

DTC 36 indicates the PCM was unable to find the high resolution pulse from Opti optical module. Could be either the harness or the module. The PCM sets that code when it does not see the pulse at all for 80 low res pulses (10 revs of the sensor wheel). The engine should continue to run satisfactorily, but the accuracy of the spark timing will suffer slightly.

The optical module is inside the Opti, in the back 1/2. Front 1/2 is the high voltage (cap & rotor), back 1/2 is the optical wheel and sensor module. There was a thread on here recently aksing where to find the optical module, but I don't think anyone came up with an answer. Might be worth a "search". If the optical module dies you need a new distributor.

Did you check both ends of the Opti harness - including the gray connector on the bracket on the passenger side of the intake manifold?

Ok thank you, Yes i have pulled it off and cleaned both ends male and female. I am going to get a harness 1st and i guess bite the bullet if that doesnt fix it. this opti is about 2 years old and maybe 4000 miles. What does everyone think about the ACCEL opti?

I've seen more complaints about the Accel that just about any other replacement (except maybe the real cheap eBay ripoffs).
