Code 32 (EGR fault)

My car has been throwing this code a lot lately. Sometimes it will turn the SES light on, and sometimes it won't. I've cleared the code a number of times, and it will come back after 15 minutes of driving. It especially comes on after WOT, but now it comes on right away. My fans also come on automatically when the SES light is on no matter what the temp is. What exactly is this code for? Is the EGR solenoid/diaphram bad? As far as I know the engine is completely stock, and has stock O2's, sensors, and what not. And yes I did a search.

Re: Code 32 (EGR fault)

Code 32 is set when the egr valve is commanded on and the MAP sensor does not see a pressure change.

Could be any part of the EGR system, this code is only saying that there is not enough exhaust gas being recirculated.

This could be an inoperative EGR solenoid, EGR valve. Also check for cracked / split / unconnected vacuum lines.

I have a 94 Z M6 and have run into this problem as well.

The combination of exhaust gas and unburnt fuel causes a soot build up on the intake side of the EGR system, and after 12 years causes a blockage or restriction.

I first tried carb cleaner on the passages. Worked for a little, code came back.

I eventually took off the intake to clean the passages, because access is very limited.

On cars where you have more access, i have seen guys attach an old speedometer cable to there drill + carb cleaner to get the soot / sludge out.

Also if you start to take it apart i suggest a small inspection mirror.

Thank you. Was your's just the passages being clogged? I was thinking that was it at first since I have no cracked hoses. Maybe I will just shoot a mass amount of carb cleaner down it. Did the carb cleaner do anything to your O2 sensors?

Could this also be causing my semi-worse gas milage? I got 22-23 highway when I first bought the car. Now it is around 19.

Re: Code 32 (EGR fault)

I used shoebox's procedure found here

http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_EGR.html

I ruled out the solenoid and valve. tried to clean the deposits in the intake but code came back.

I used Gm top engine Cleaner, spray can version part number 12345089. It does not say if its o2 sensor safe.

Re: Code 32 (EGR fault)

I'm getting the same code 32, I found that the EGR diaphram was leaking (wouldn't hold vac) that was replaced but same code popped up again, I followed shoebox's procedure and everything checked out ok except when I checked the new one with the engine runnig hooked up a hand vac. pump to the EGR and with every stroke of the pump I could only get to 7" then immediately to zero is this normal? this seams very strange, with engine off it opens and holds vac. Engine is freashly rebuilt, manifold throughly cleaned, engine vac is running about 17" at idle, can't find any leaks, could this have anything to do with code 32? what's the range the MAP needs to be in when EGR is activated?

Re: Code 32 (EGR fault)

For the record, I fixed the problem. My EGR was holding vacuum so I took it off. Looked at it, and both holes are plugged with grease, carbon, and a whole lot of nastiness. Carb cleaner did the job. I also sprayed some down the intake tube from the exhaust manifold. My car idles better, and feels healthier overall. Thanks guys.
