Its allways nice to see a guy that can admit he's wrong..lol

But yeah the noise is because the parts are connected to the block not from reverberation off the covers etc.

Also the fact that the sensor is in the block doesn't mean it doesn't register outside interference such as exhaust.
The LT4 had a different knock module, with a filter specifically to filter out the Crane Gold roller rock noise. The noise is transmitted through the metal of the block at a much stronger rate that off the surface of the valve covers, through the air and around to the bottom of the engine, through the iron block and the coolant to the little piezo microphone in the knock sensor. I'd rate that as a non-issue.

The covers would be somewhat effective in minimizing noise emitted outside the engine, including to the passenger compartment. That may well have been the deciding issue.

The 92 Corvette LT1 valve covers were magnesium. In 93 they were replaced with plastic. Ref:
Magnesium is expected to roll up lots of new applications in the '90s, but it recently lost a round to a thermoset plastic on the '93 model Corvette. American Cyanamid Co. of Wayne, NJ, replaced the light-weight the cast metal on the valve covers of Corvette's 5.7L LT-1 engine with its Cyglas high-performance thermoset material.

Doing a bit of research is always a good idea.
