Coated forged .030 pistons or not...

What are the useful benefits of .030 forged coated pistons and are they worth it?

No offense man, but if you keep asking all these ?'s you're never going to get an engine together.

Quite a few of us, I think even Bret have given you some recommended setups, and you keep going around in circles asking the same types of questions...

Dude, this is the first time I have asked about coated pistons and what their purpose serves.

I am trying to make very informed decisions from the knowledgeable folk in the forum so that I get the setup that fits me best. Plus I am in no hurry to get it done.

Plus I am sure that other people may be interested in knowing the answer to this question, therefore it is not a stupid question.

If you have something constructive to add, then please do. If you want to chastise me then please dont waste your time.

Now back on topic.

What kind of coatings? There are heat retention coatings for the crown, and moly coatings for the skirts. To me, the moly coatings are a good idea. The benefit of the crown coatings on anything other than a top-end, max HP effort is questionable. There are discussion of the subject in threads on the Advanced Tech forum.

Forged pistons are mandatory for "power adder" applications..... nitrous, S/C, turbo. Not essential for NA buildups. Hypereutectics can be lighter and dimensionally more stable.

0.030" over is only useful if you've had your block bored 0.030" over.

The Mahle pistons appear to be "coated", cant say what is coated.
I can get the "house brand" which is an uncoated Mahle pistont, bout all I know.

I am getting parts at cost through a friend.

Hey, at least this one isn't a FAQ like most of his threads...

Well, to stay on task....my Diamond pistons are coated. Polydyn heat rejection on the crowns and anti-friction on the skirts. Here's a pic. I don't know how much power it is worth, but I was building a nice motor with good parts and it was a small price to pay, even if it was only worth 3-5hp. My setup is built for nitrous, so I'm thinking they will be of benefit with the high cylinder pressures and heat issues when I spray a 200 on top of what I have.
