Question clunking coming from car when stopping

ok i have a 97' camaro v8. i have had 2 camaros both hav\ing this problem an ddon't know what it is. Everytime i drive the car and come to a stop at either a stop light or just stopping period the whole car does this clunking thing. it feels like a i have a bowling ball in the trunk rolling around. it feels like it could be from the tranny and back. i was thinking maybe it is a mount or something that i don't know about.
here are somethings we might rule out: did the tranny mount, just rebuilt the rearend, have a new panhard bar and lca barkets, and just did the back brakes.
please help this clunking is extermely annoying.

does it happen when you are stopped or stopping?

sounds to me like your driveshaft is hitting your exhaust...or vice versa.

look to either replace your exhaust clamps or the universal on your driveshaft.

I hear the cluncking noise too. In my case there is some play between the tranny and the rear end.

It does the sound when it upshifts from 2nd into 1st gear... I know its free-play. Maybe my tranny or rear end... I need to get down there and turn the driveshat to see where is the play at.

Your rear is almost done. Same thing happened to my friend. Clunked for a while then it gave out.

i highly doubt that considering that i just had my rearend completly rebuilt about 2 weeks ago, like i said in my first post. ok lets reword this it not a noise at all. i can feel it in my seat when i stop, it almost feels like i'm going over bumps. it only last for maybe 2 sec and then stops and does it again at the next stop and so on. usually i have to go over 15 mph and then stop for it to do it. also it is a m6.

have you checked to see if the driveshaft is slapping into the exhaust yet?

Same happened with me. If I used the brakes sparingly, I could avoid the noise. I fixed it, though.

Let's look at the facts: You have two cars that do this, one with a recently rebuilt rearend...

With that said, you can pretty much toss out theories on leaks, bearing wear, etc....

Universal joints would merit looking at, but hard to believe both cars have the problem at the same time.

My $$ is on it being something completely normal - How about a your torque convertor unlocking as the rpms' drop...or the tranny internals 'shifting down' so that you'll be in 1st gear when you take off at the next light...

My guess is the 'mystery' noise is just that...a mystery, and you just want to know what's causing the problem...not a case of it sounding like something's damaged or broken. Try slowing to a stop from 40 or so mph, while in neutral, and see if that makes a difference .

Hth...

well i doubt its my a4 tranny since i don't have one, but thanks for the input. i think i might have the same probelm as you camaross, because my pinion seal is leaking where the shaft goes into the rearend and tranny fluid does leak a little out of the spline input when i have the shaft off. but my mechanic friend said it might be because the spline needs more grease becuase it is sucking in air and pushing it out, i did that and it help out a little.
