Re: cloyes double roller on 94

you need the cam, the opti, the timing cover, chain and the opti harness

I kinda ran into this problem with my car also... Anyway you put it you got to run the stock timing set or another LT1 timing set (lunati, etc.), which all are pretty much stock LT1 quality timing sets and also all non-roller sets.

OR

Replace the opti for a vented opti, get a 95+ cover, cam, and the opti harness, couple hoses, etc. (which adds up too well over $500 just for the opti swap alone from gmpartsdirect.com not including the cam.)
And then you can finally get either the cloyes double roller or a LT4 timing set.

OR

Comp Cams makes a double roller timing set for the 1st generation LT1 timing set which will work with your stock opti.. I believe this will also work with the stock H20 pump. Only catch is that this timing set is over $500

So, pretty much anyway you put it if you want anything better than the stock timing set your gonna have to expect to spend over $500 on it is what it comes down to.

You don't need to change the cam, just replace the dowel pin on the with a longer one.

Re: cloyes double roller on 94

These are your only choices for a 94 motor.

The Cloyes - CLO-9-9100
Lunati - LUN-93094
or the factory replacement.

The Cloyes and Lunati will state that the parts are for 92-93 only. I called them directly and they both said that they are a direct fit for the 94 motor. The reason that they do not include the 94 year is that some late model 94's came with the 95 setup.

You would think that they would say that it would fit some early 94's. But they don't.

Re: cloyes double roller on 94

so if i get a 95 timing cover that is all i need it is a direct replacement?
and then i have to get a 95 opti that doesnt have a keyed pin out of the center of the cam it runs off the dowel in the cam that is off to the side?

is there any way to make that longer or replace it if i already cut it for my 94 opti?

You can't use a 1994 and earlier cam with a vented opti, even if you use a longer dowel pin. The hole that is drilled in the front of the stock 1994 and earlier cam is too small. You must change the cam or have the nose of it drilled out.

Only real things you can do to get a better timing set is either do the opti swap, which will give you a lot more options towards a better timing set or go with the comp cams double roller timing set (CCA-3206) which goes for a bit over $500... which, depending on how you go about things may be still decently cheaper than the opti swap. The one kindof big thing that most people leave out when they talk about doing the opti swap is the harness which just happens to cost $75 at gmpartsdirect.com price.

That applies to stock cams, he already has a cc306. All aftermarket cams I've seen have a large hole drilled and some come with 2 pins short and long to work on both applications.
