cloyes crank timing gear

how do i get this thing on all the way? It is about 1/4" away from lining up with the cam gear, and i cant get it to go on any farther. I made a tool out of some 1" pipe and ive been hammering the hell out of it, but its not moving. Any ideas? Is the cam gear supposed to be spaced out with washers or something obvious like that?

Pull it back off and put a little oil on it. It should go on until it bottoms out on the boss of the crank snout. Also make sure you are not having any interference problems with your crank key.

Will it slide on all the way without the key?

looks like im gonna win our bet but like said it has to come off, youll know when its bottoms out it will sort of thud. you might also have a bur on the key.

lol you won that bet a while ago. I wasnt gonna rush things over a slurpee

I just have no idea how to get this thing back off now. Im gonna let the blaster soak a while and try hammering more. If that doesnt work i might have to mod this pulley puller to clear.

Get a torch and heat up the gear if you can't get it off.

If you can get it off, let it sit in an oven at 350* for about 10 min. It will slide right on.

I'm surprised no one told you to try that first. I hope you didn't mess up any main bearings beating on it like that with your "tool". haha

thats exactly what i am afraid of!!!!

i got the gear off... cleaned it and oiled it. I just put it back on. it slid on easier this time but it looks/sounds like that is as far as it goes!

what the hell do i do? If i spin a main bearing after this I definitely know why

OK so if i pull the cam out right about to the point it hits, it seems to line up. Not really liking this.

The lobes dont line up with the lifters as good as they could when i do that.

is it normal for the rotating assembly to have A SLIGHT ammount of slack in it somewhere? I get a TINY tapping sound when i go back and forth with the crank. I feel like i am doing all this to spin a damn bearing now.

Did you try heating it? Clean off all the oil first and then bake it in the oven or even a toaster oven.

You will have very little "slack" from front to back in the crank.

its on there, theres no questioning it. The first time i couldnt tell but the second time I put it on it hammered so far and just stopped solid, the sound of the hammer changed and everything.

My buddy says i can run the cam slightly forward like that and it wont hurt anything, but i am way more paranoid about my bearings than that right now. Debating pulling and it building the entire motor later.

I wouldn't ever consider running the cam out of position. You need all the bearing surface area you can get. Something is wrong with the crank or the gear.

Make sure there isnt a little shaving or ridge of crank metal behind the gear where it slid on the crank. If there is, you need to dress that so the gear will go on all the way. I always debur the parts on the sharp edges so they dont get scraped up when they go together, then heat and lube to install.

well guys I checked and checked again and it wasnt lining up right... until i just threw the chain on it and torqued everything down. Then all of the sudden that 1/4" error disappeared guess i just need to try stuff before i freak out about it.
