Closed loop dies??
Closed loop dies??
On my way into work this morning my car started to act weird, when I gave it gas the rpm showed erratic behavior and was cutting out and popping bad like my ignition was going south, but it's a new opti about 20,000 miles on it, then out of nowhere it flashed an SES light, then died, it would not start again or even sputter like it wanted to. After letting it sit for a little bit and unplugging the MAF so the engine would run in open mode, she started up and ran fine. Now once I get to work and plug the MAF ack in, she ran. WTF??
maybe an O2 going? Is this normal behavior for when a sensor is going? I know when my opti went she would turn over, and pop and tried to run, this time when she died she wouldn't start at all, all it would do is turn over...
anyone??

I THINK my IAC that goe sinto my elbow was not connected or came loose, would that cause the same symptoms?? What would be the error code associated with it??
Re: Closed loop dies??
I think I found it, when I let her sit for a while, it ran fine, then once it was starting to get to around 180, it started sputtering and died, so I pulled over and tried to start it, would not fire. I took snow and dumped it on top of the ignition control module, and she started up and ran a little rough, so I waited with more snow on top for about 5 minutes and fired it up and she ran perfect until it started to melt the ice and then it died again, so I'm blaming the module.
Re: Closed loop dies??
wasn't the module
now the SES light comes on after 1 second of the car starting, whqat kills me is the car will start right up and run perfect, then as it gets warmer it starts to break up and will try and die, the idle goes to 1500, then down, then to 400 and then back up to 900 again..I do not want to blame the opti, only because when my last one went, it wouldn't even turn over, now with the new module it starts, but after a minute starts to act up again, anyone?? I can't get it scanned because autozone does not have a scanner (1994) and I freakin sold mine

Re: Closed loop dies??
Just thought Id mention if you unplug the MAF the car doesnt go into open loop. Sounds like maybe you have that ICM problem. ICM gets hot and starts to cut out creating erratic idling and driving RPM. That or you may try replacing the coil/coil wire.
Re: Closed loop dies??
if it runs perfect in open loop and horrible in closed loop its a sensor. not an 02 sensor but a pretty important one.. iac, maf, temp, map, tps... get it running and wait for it to turn sour.. then start unplugging these one by one and see if it runs better when you unplug it
Got it scanned, the codes were
42
36
16
84
it also threw an O2 sensor code but I knew that one existed anyways. I unplugged the MAF and it threw a code for that, so I checked that by while the car was running I disconnected it and it stumbled, but caught itself and continued to run.
I put a new coil in today, and when it gets hot, it doesn't die anymore, but the SES light is still on???
I reset the PCM, light comes on, but it starts with no problem I'm gonna guess the opti with less then 20,000 miles on it is no good.. Anyone know where I can get a cheap one??
It wouldn't concern me to replace the opti everytime it goes out, if they weren't so expensive

Re: Closed loop dies??
took almost everything out I could set a world record, took me 20 minutes to get everything out except the opti!!! Looking at the opti after I unplugged the wires, 2 wires were rusted inside the opti connection. Tomorrow, I take out the opti if weather here permits. Definitely need new wires too.
