Cleaning Throttle Body
Cleaning Throttle Body
Hey guys i have a quick question, M throttle body is pretty dirty on the inside and out and i was wondering if i took off all the sensors and put it in a container of boiling water and some soap or something if that would hurt it at all. Does this sound like a bad idea or would it be ok to do. The carbon and grease is pretty built up on it and i figured this would help get it off alot easier then scrubbing it for an hour.
Re: Cleaning Throttle Body
yeah its carbon build up, thats what im trying to get off but its so caked on there. Theres also alot of crap on the outside to. I dont see how boiling it would hurt it cause they do it the the intakes and heads to clean them, why not the throttle body if you just take the sensors off
Re: Cleaning Throttle Body
Use CRC throttle body cleaner that is safe for fuel injected cars. There is actually a picture of an L98/LT1 style TB on the front. It will protect the coating on the TB blades and clean it well.
Re: Cleaning Throttle Body
Boiling water will not necessarily removed caked on carbon.... it's not water soluble. They make "throttle body cleaner" specifically to remove the kinds of materials that build up in throttle bodies. Why "boil" the shaft bearings in hot water and detergent? How will that heat affect the temper of the return spring? Will it leave water in the threads of the throttle stop screw, causing it to rust? Will the boiling water and detergent remove the anti-coking coating on the blades?
You'll need the "kit" for the top and bottom plate gaskets. Be carefull not to destroy the seal for the TPS sensor. When cleaning the pintle on the IAC motor, do not apply any force or try and move it.

Re: Cleaning Throttle Body
I would listen to javier97z28 if I was you. The throttle bodies have a coating on the the throttle shaft to prevent wear that can later cause vaccum leaks. There are special cleaners that he is suggesting that prevent the coating from coming off during cleaning. I know the new throttle bodies on GM cars and trucks have this coating and there is info on GM's website regarding proper cleaners.
Re: Cleaning Throttle Body
Leave the Tb alone if its not sticking. if you are concerned with carbon build up seafoam the engine and be done with it. Just remember to change your oil after cause it does tend to thin it out a bit.
