Cleaning the MAF for amatuers

I've never messed with the MAF sensor before but our Grand prix with the 3800 Series II engine keeps throwing a PO102 code. My mechanic guy says the K&N may be oiling up the wires in the MAF. I bought some electric component cleaner from Radio Shak. I took the ducting off now what. All I see is a big screen. Is that what I clean?

I suggest you take it off the car and clean it by spraying cleaner
through the MAF. The TPS does not like carb cleaner so it's best done
off the car. The wires are behind the screen. Just liberally spray through
the honeycomb and over a white paper towel. Once the stuff coming out
seems clean, your done. This applies to an LT1 so hopefully its the same
for your setup.

Re: Cleaning the MAF for amatuers

I was able to take the spring clip off, then the screen. Inside there was a vertical post. It had a funnel type opening at the top. I couldn't quite see inside of it. I sprayed the screen with electronics cleaner (while it was off) then very gently stuck a q-tip soaked with cleaner in the small hole. I tried to reach around behind the post since it seemed like there might have been something back there. Swabbed out the body of the MAF body with the q-tip then put it back together. I cleared the code PO 102. We'll see if it holds.

Take MAF off of elbow. Unbolt MAF ends from MAF. Take the ends off and spray them separately and spray and wipe them down with brake cleaner. Take the MAF sensor and liberally spary it down with contact cleaner. Don't spray the MAF with brake cleaner though. Then put the unit back together and voila!
