Cleaning the MAF...

Im taking my MAF housing to work tomorrow to polish it and found the little "bars" that have the resistors are very dirty. Could this be causing any problems and how do I clean them without effecting the resistors? Also does removing the bar in the middle of the housing help air flow or does it hurt? I have heard it does good and I have heard it can hurt it. Someone bring some clarity here. Thanks!

P.S.

Yes it is apart. I'm not going to polish it with it all together .

Yes you can clean them but be very careful and take your time. Dont use rags, you might snag one of the wires and break the resistor. What I did was use a cotton swab and spary carb clearner on the swab tip and clean up the areas in the maf.

Don't use carb cleaner on it!!! I've heard that you can damage the sensors. I was told to use a cotton swab and windex

Be carefull. I used Radio Shack Precision Electronics Cleaner and a cotton swab, worked great for me. The Radio Shack cleaner is like $10.00.

Yea I would never touch it. Just get some electric parts cleaner and spray it real good. I just did that to mine about a week ago, runs fine.

a buddy of mine couldnt pass emmissions, had SES lts intermittantly, codes pointed to MAF sensor, pulled it out, it was filthy. Turns out he over-oiled his re-usable air filter & oil mist/vapor got all over the MAF sensor. YES, a dirty MAF sensor will definitley cause you problems. As everyone said, just be really carefull about cleaning it. Aerosol electrical cleaner or isopropyl alcohol seem to work best & are proven.

p.s GM also has a tech service notice out that contaminated MAF sensors are likely caused by aftermarket air filters being over-oiled & that it is NOT a warranty covered item...

so if you have a k&n, put a paper one in when you go to the dealer, and don't put the k&n sticker on
