Exclamation Ckeck your antifreeze !

I went to start the Camaro yesterday in the 9 degree weather. I started it up and went inside to get Allison and Heather. When I came back out the car was slowly dying
I managed to get in about the time she died on me. Everything looked fine, but when I cranked it back over nothing happened, no spark or anything

I check everything over and finally found that the water pump fuse had blown. I plugged a new fuse and pulled the cap to make sure the water pump was flowing. When I pulled off the cap I found nothing but a slushy mess. All of my coolant had frozen The water pump was frozen solid inside.

Just a reminder. Keep an eye on that coolant. Mine had been in there for a year or so, and was a cheapo autozone brand. FWIW, my van wasn't frozen. using Peak anti freeze... lol

I dunno, I always use a 75/25 mix with more 75% anti freeze. I used a 50/50 mix in my van with no probs
I think maybe the anti freeze has just broken down and the glychol isn't doing it's job, or the fact it was cheap $4.99 Autozone brand.

Good news is that my opti just got a lil damp but no damage, running good today now that it's up to a whopping 30 degrees

How well do those cheap anti-freeze testers work?

Another good reason to use NPG, no H2O in it. I own stock in the company by the way .

Speaking of antifreeze...does anyone know why the "red stuff" gums up and clogs the heater core? I flushed my heater core thouroughly last year and now its clogged again....what's the deal?

Here's an article on the subject.

Ok...so DEX-COOL sucks...but what's a practical solution? Are there potentially other areas of my motor that are clogging up like the heater core? I dont like this.

You could flush your cooling system really well and go to the green. I say really well, because the two mixing is also bad.

That article you posted says nothing about it being "bad"

It says, "Mixing a “green” coolant with DEX-COOL reduces the batch’s change interval to 2 years or 30,000 miles, but will otherwise cause no damage to the engine. In order to change back to DEX-COOL however, the cooling system must first be thoroughly drained and flushed."

Which tells me that it won't last as long as a pure Dex-Cool / Water mixture, but it won't cause engine damage either.
