Choosing cam

I have a 97 Formula that just blew a head gasket and I am gonna do a cam swap I was just wondering what you guys recommend I dont have to pass any emissions right now I have the mods in sig and also will be needing roller rockers and valve springs and I will be getting mid length headers soon as well. I was going to originally get the hotcam kit but they are on back order til who knows when. I would like something comprable to that but with more power since I am going this route anyway. Thanks for help

Your other hot choice would be the Comp Cams 305. Very similar to the Hotcam.

Id try a xe 224/230, with good tuning you should pass emissions and it'll give you good power and drivability. Chicago suburbs in the house

Lope is going to depend on the LSA you get. Most go with a 112. They would both sound about the same, but if you wanted to get technical, the 224/230 would be a slight bit lopeyer cause it has 4 degrees more intake duration. You wouldn't be able to tell though. The 224/230 would make more power and be more driveable. The extreme energy lobes make more vacume which helps idle alot, and makes better low-end power. 224/230 XE all the way. the 305 and 306 are oldddddd.

How do the olddddd cc 305, and 306 compare to the hot cam and the 224/230 XE ? I'm looking for the power without too much of a noticable lope.

The hotcam would be classified as old to. There compared to the 305. You can chage the LSA (lobe seperation angle) to get better idle. 112=lope, 114=kinda smooth, you can still tell theres somethin though, 116= pretty damn smooth, close to stock. Bad thing is, the more LSA, the more power you loose.

Thanks I think Im gonna go with xe grind 224/230 I never have to take emissions anyway cuz its a rebuilt title so I am exempt even if I did I have O2 sims and will be getting LT1 edit. How will that grind run with no tuning though cuz I will have to wait a little bit for the tune?

Should be "ok", but far from great. Idle will prolly suffer, and problly move around a little till it gets warmed up. Cams not that big though. So it should ride till then.

Looks like a decent little cam for stock heads. Are you keeping the heads stock?

If you don't have emissions, you'll want to invest in some longtube headers, btw.
