Chirping from valve cover after cam install
Chirping from valve cover after cam install
Ok i finished my cam install a few nights ago. I havent really drivin it but I do have about 30 minutes of idle time on it. Just a few minutes ago i developed a chirping sound coming from the driver side valve cover. It will get louder and then quite down and then get louder again. Seems like it louder after I get off the gas. Its a hotcam with brand new 1.6 roller tips rockers. Anyone have any idea what this could be?? Also I didnt clearance the valve covers for the rockers but this noise was not there when I first started it up so i dont think thats it. Anyone got any input???
Re: Chirping from valve cover after cam install
i'm having the same sound on the same side but mine all of a sudden just happened and I have checked rockers pushrods guideplates and even replaced my comp rs with some new oem ones

Usually a "chirping" sound is a rocker banging against a valve tip. I'd start checking all moving parts with the heads to see if there is any excess wear happening. Check your retainer to rocker clearence as well (.030 minimum/width of an average paper clip).

Yeah I tried new lifters, different rockers, and installed new guideplates. Springs are comp 918s with titanium retainers which never had issues. I don't hear it at idle but as soon as I blip the throttle it makes the noise. The weirdest thing is..is taht the noise actually slows down slower than the engine speed when i let off the gas. It's like something is loose but everything in the valvetrain is fine. It starts as a chirp then makes kinda metal on metal sound and when i let off the sound stays for an extra second before it drops down with the rpms.

Take your acc. belt off and try it again. It's possible one of your accessory pullies is going south or maybe even the waterpump... get an automotive stethascope and see if you can pinpoint it.
Re: Chirping from valve cover after cam install
did you check your lifters?
if one of the rollers on your lifter is bad
your cam is junk.
this happend to me, the roller on the lifter went bad and chewed up the cam lobe so bad that the cam was riding on the 2 edges of the lifter causing a chirping sound. only every once in a while it would squeek. always at take off and slowing down to a stop. very rarely did it at an idle .sound familiar?
good luck
