You can use an adapter and compressed air or you can bring the piston to TDC and the valve will rest on the top of it after going down a little.

Turning the piston to TDC is a win-win technique.

if you put each cylinder to tdc and do the intake and exhaust springs for that specific cylinder then theres absolutely NO way for the valve to drop....

another way if you dont have air is to use a piece of nylon rope smaller than your spark plug threads diameter, put the piston at the bottom then push the rope into the plug hole, leave a few inches hang out the plug hole, then bring the piston up and the rope will hold the valves closed, change your springs and just turn the engine back a bit and pull your rope out.

ive done this many times when doing valve seals for someone who doesnt have air at there place

Yep.
Why would you do it any other way?

I've used all three methods; rope, air, and TDC. They all work well.

i just did mine 2day for the first time with the heads on. lemme tell you, it is a real pain with a screw type valve compressor, but is doable. i brought it to tdc and did it that way. its really no big deal, there is a little room between the piston and the valve, so it does drop down a little, but your valve seal should hold up the valve plenty to get your retainers on. Its MUCH easier, and faster w/ the heads off obviously, but its gonna cost you.
