Good point about the dummy bearing. That will make installation easier. I don't know if I would ever try it without a backlash setting. I just wouldn't feel comfortable driving it. A backlash dial indicator is pretty cheap. Mine only cost about $50.
by using the old shim, i didnt have to make a dummy bearing...and it wasnt too hard to set the backlash by using the marking compound...just time consuming trying to get it narrowed in...but well worth $50, especially being a high school student with only a $70 per week income...lol

different ratio require different series carriers. most lower ratio (up to 3.73 i think... ??) have a 3 series carrier, and ratios numerically higher use a 2 series. on my rear end, the stock carrier was a 3 series (stock 3.08 gears) and the posi i used was a 2 series, so i either needed "thick" 3 series gears, or im my case, i used a ring gear spacer, and took up the difference. call the people you are ordering your gears from ahead of time, and tell them what is in the car now (most likely 3 series), and tell them what ratio you are putting in, they will know what you need.

p.s. --if i am mixed up here about 2 and 3 series please correct me, i havnt done this work in about 5 months...and i forgot which my car had, and which i put in...but series refers basically to the thickness of the gear, and where the carrier sits in the housing

From what I remember if your car came stock with 3.23 or higher you have a 2 series carrier, if it's 3.42 or lower it's a 3 series carrier.

Basically if it's 6-speed car with a 150MPH speedo you have a 3-series and if otherwise you have a 2 series.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
