Changed water pump, now oil leak at shaft seal...common?

I had to change my wp on the LT4 for the first time in 100k miles...put it all back together and now the dam wp gear shaft seal is leaking like a siv....is this normal to occur after the shaft I'm sure got taped around some getting the pump off and on....

Don't tell me there are some wp's out there that don't line up with the shaft and get it out of center or something causing the massive leak...its a Bosch pump.

I personally think that the seal was brittle(from age) and in wrestling around with the pump, it split or got deformed to the point it can't seal.

Yeah, I just got it off tonight, was fairly brittle compared to the new one...I think it has been on there 7 years.

Got the old one off in record time, took a large nail, and tapped the center of the metal seal edge on one side until it made a good size hole, then tapped the nail at a steep angle in the hole till it tore the metal just a bit, then did the same thing on the other side then popped a seal remover tool in the nail hole and it popped right out....nail the hole not on the rubber as you could mar the sealing surface, but right in the middle between the rubber seal and the outside edge of the metal.....popped the new one right on using the old sharpie marks-a-lot install tool I made the last time around on the TA...maybe 10 minutes to get it out and new on in once the opti was pulled forward and tilted down...didn't even remove the plug wires from the opti....but I don't think you can do it that way on a LT1..this was the LT4..the accessories are in a different location.

And wow, 100k miles on the opti too...guess maybe I should put a new one on..but wth...see how long it goes, got 2 of them setting on the shelf, and another one that had 100k on it that I thought had some bearing issues but it didn't, turned out to be the same issue as the other post up right now.
