changed 94 alternator to newer model type. Having issues.

Got the AC Delco alternator made later in 94 and has 140 amps. The car came with the older less amp version. There is one bracket that does not work now and the battery connector on the back of the alternator is different. Does anyone know the best way to fix this or a kit or part numbers and where to buy them? Or how you rigged it to work Oem is discontinued on a different bracket and connectors. Thanks in advance!

The battery connection on the back is a bolt with the early version and a stud with the later, but it should be in the same location and connect the same. Otherwise, the mounting should be just the same, AFAIK.

Here is an Ebay auction for a rear bracket. It is one piece. On mine the one that won't line up now is a one piece that bolts on the header stud and only used for one mounting point. The alternators side by side are identical except for one threaded spot for the bolt on the drivers top one. The new alternator takes a bigger bolt and its one inch off from the old alternator. I ordered the part from AC Delco direct and they and the chevy parts said the part was for a newer model 94 Z28.

I checked the parts manual and there is only one upper bracket (one in your link), p/n 10223087 for all years 93-97; there are two different lowert brackets (mount to the exhaust stud) and looks like you can have either/or in 1994

93 and 94 (1st design); p/n 10231654; 150.75mm c/l of mounting holes
94(2nd Design) and 95-97; p/n 10229870; 122.75mm c/l

Yes, I checked the car and there is one that goes from the front passenger header bolt end to the alternator and the bolt is larger than the one on the old alternator. I checked and found the bracket for $4.26 and the dealer said it was a long way away. Sure hope the S&H is cheap. Very glad to hear that there is a simple solution and can be done right. Plus this should help others in the future. I searched for an hour and never came across this problem.

I bet the people that have changed alts have left that bracket off. A lot of people do (even when not doing an alt swap), because it is such nuisance to put back on. That may be why there has not been much mentioned about it.

I cut mine down, heated it cherry red, hammered the end flat and to the proper angle and drilled a new hole.

Re: changed 94 alternator to newer model type. Having issues.

I was thinking the same thing after contemplating if it was worth waiting for a part to be delivered from so far away. I work for a body shop so this should be an easy thing to do. I also noticed the last two times I removed my alternator a bolt was missing. The alternator mounting spots were getting real sloppy and the bolts would just work there way out over time even though they were tight when installed. Guess I better put locking washers on this time. Thanks for all the help and ideas. This site saves me so much time and aggravation. I am curious why GM changed the alternator in the middle of 94 if anyone knows. I assume it was not up to the needs of the car, but maybe its something else.
