CC306 vs. XE 230/236 vs. GM847

I will be coming up with around $2000 soon. I want my car to do low 12's or maybe even high 11's. There are plenty of cam choices out there, and I ma having a hard time coming up with a decision. With my car, emissions is not an issue, but driveability is. I need to be able to drive around town, get descent gas mileage, and pull out of a parking space without my car stalling out on me. I have it down to the Comp Cams 306 cam, the Comp Cams XE 230/236 cam, and the GM 847 cam.

I would also be considering a head cam package, preferably with one of these cams. I really like the sound of the GM847, and I really like that it is made by GM! All input is welcome....please put me in the deep 12's/high 11's! Thanks!

May I suggest the XE 233/239 cam? A nice inbetween one that should give you the best of the 306 & 847 without being too radical. Your choice tho.

The 847 does have a GM part number, but it's actually manufactured by Crane. Just an FYI..

If you go for a heads & cam pkg, why not find out what cam goes with the heads in question? A cam made for the heads as well as what you're looking for as far as driveability will suit your needs, not a compromise of what most might be looking for (read: off the shelf).

Both the 306 and the 847 have weaker lobes than the XE series cams. For a stock bottom end, I always reccomend the XE series. Having a bit harder lobe provides better cylinder pressure, thus providing you with better low-end power. The harder lobe also provides you with better vacum, so your driveability will be better. I drove my XE 230/236 everyday and had no issues at all. The 306 and 847 will provide the same peak power as the 230/236, but your low end will out do them, and you don't have to rev as high. IMO there is no comparison. The XE is far superior in the technical aspect and I wouldn't go with any thing less than a XE grind. JMO.

CMotorsports has a 227/233 cam on a 111 lsa. They say its THE CAM for street/strip cars looking for huge power without sacrificing much driveability. Sounds good to me, but I change my mind every second.

Combination uses a XE "style" lobe, and the 227/233 would be a great cam. You won't make as much "peak" hp over the others, but it is still a good cam. I still vote 230/236 or the 233/239 the other guy mentioned.

Haha I'm still stuck in between all of these cams. My personal favorite is the GM 847, but it has the least praise among people, dont know why?? The 230/236 is definitely a contender. The cc306 can stall your car out sometimes at red lights, parking lots, etc....anyone have the rwhp differences? Thanks

I'll break it down for you like this: The 847 is a good cam. It will have similar lobes to the cc306 and it would basically be the same cam, just a bit bigger. You would/should make a few more "peak" hp over the 306, but you take the chance of loosing a little on the low-end. It's a give and take situation. I'm not quite sure why the 847 would be your top contender. Is it because it is the biggest? I personally would go with the XE 233/239, or the XE 236/242. For daily driving, go with the 230/236. Like I stated before, the better vacum you get from the harder lobes provides better driveability. No surging or stalling at all when tuned correctlly. Not to mention I made 397 rwhp with some locally ported heads.

i really like my 230/236. i put down 333RWHP through an automatic and it ran low 12's all year round. im looking for high 11's and 370RWHP with it this year now that it is a 6 speed (less drivetrain loss) on STOCK unported heads. it also wont need the gear that the 847 will. i dont care for the 306 too much. but both the XE and the 847 are great cams. cant really go wrong with either, but u have to take into consideation other mods that u are going to do. settle on what heads u are going to run, then do cam choice. good luck
