CC306 too big?

I'm done numerous searches on this cam and didn't find exactly what I was looking for!

Can I run this cam on stock motor? IE...no head work except maybe 1.6 rockers? I just don't want to have to pull the valve springs out ya know. My car has 115,000 miles on it so I'm gonna go ahead and replace the timing chain and intake manifold gasket while I'm in there!

I just like this cam...the numbers and how it sounds and everything plus I planned on doing heads this winter sometime!

Let me know what you guys think!

you WILL need aftermarket valvesprings, stock springs arent adequate

Re: CC306 too big?

Definitely need new valve springs as the lift will be near .600 with 1.6rr. The cc306 also won't make as much power without head work. Look into cc305 or you could still use cc306 but buy new valve springs. Just won't see its full potential witout heads done.

Re: CC306 too big?

I understand that I want see it's full potiental till heads are done but I don't want to buy a small cam now and have to end up buying another one when I do do heads in the future...so I will need new valve springs...how hard are they to install while the heads are on the car? Anyone done it or have a write up on it?

Re: CC306 too big?

I am doing the same thing you are thinking about. I have a CC306 Cam and plan on installing it soon. I did my research and found it can still make 350-360 rwhp on stock heads. I also noticed a lot of people who install the LT4 hot cam, CC304, CC305 usually end up changing it out for something bigger. IM with you, im gonna swap it in once and never have to cam it again and then just work on the others to get it to its full potential.

Shoebox has a writeup for doing valve springs:

www.shbox.com

Should be under his cam swap install guide.

You will need to machine the heads to get the valve springs to fit. I had my machine shop do it. You can probably search for info on how to, not sure if you can do it yourself or not. Good luck

Re: CC306 too big?

Try a search on the GM 847 because several people have done this
cam swap with stock heads (and appropriate valve train). I would
imagine that the 230/244 CC306 and the 232/242 GM847 are close
enough to do a comparison.

Re: CC306 too big?

The GM847 is huge, much bigger than the CC306. It has much higher lift numbers. Both are streetable and both have superior gains even with stock heads.

that depends on which valvesprings you use, there quite a few part numbers out there that dont require any maching to work with stock heads and can handle a decent amount of seat and open pressure (enuf for most hydraulic stuff anyway)

Untrue, Competition motor sports sells a spring set that can handle up to .610 lift that use the stock spring seats.

Re: CC306 too big?

So if I get the 306...what springs should I get...and does it matter what RR's I go with...as long as they are 1.6's?

Re: CC306 too big?

My bad. I bought Comp cams double valve springs and they needed to have head machined, guess other brands don't. Learn something new everyday.

Re: CC306 too big?

I just put the 306 in my car and made 351rwhp/365rwtq through an auto and stock heads. I ran the Comp 987 springs and didn't have to do any machining on the heads. The car pulls like a raped ape up top(6700rpm shift points and 6900 rev limiter) and sounds mean as hell.
